1st Gift Bag Delivery Day

On September 23, 2009 we delivered our first set of gift bags to the children at The Children's Hospital. We made a little over 200 bags. These bags included coloring or activity books, crayons or pens, stuffed animals, and a Halloween craft activity. Each bag was made specific to each gender and age group.

We visited 4 floors of the hospital that held the long term patients. Unfortunately, most of the children were in isolation and we were unable to visit with them but we made sure that they all received a gift bag.

The last floor was when we were able to go in and talk to the children and their families. What an amazing experience. Many children were so excited and were so fun to talk to you! It's amazing that spending only a few minutes with a child can leave an impression on your heart for a lifetime! We came across a handful of these children and received consent from the parents to show their photos. Here are a few of the kids:









At the end of the day when I walked through my front door and my kids came running up to see me, all I could do was fall to my knees and hold them. Every day those of us who have healthy kids, take their health for granted. I know that I am guilty of that. I am very grateful to have had such an eye opening experience. My heart and my prayers go out to all the families that are at the hospital with their children right now. I pray that your beautiful children will be able to come home soon, healthy and safe. For the parents and family members that are at the hospital every day with their child, with their brave faces and aching hearts, I pray that God will continue to give you the strength that you need to make it through. Because only through God can we endure such trials and tribulations in our lives.

The Fight For Autism

The weekend of September 11th-13th, there are amazing events going on where proceeds from all events will go to Autism Speaks. We met with the planning committee of this event a few weeks ago. Every person involved either has a child or knows a child with Autism. These wonderful people have poured their hearts and souls into this event in hopes of bringing more awareness to the public about Autism.

This wonderful event starts out on Friday night (9-11) with a Wheels and Heels Black Tie and Leather Ball. This evening will be filled with music, food, drinks and tributes to those doctors and advocates who have dedicated this past year to Autism. After the ball, Saturday holds a Scavenger Run for anyone with cars and motorcycles that want to show them off! Rhonda Spellman

Our journey with The Children's Hospital started around March 2009. Since then, God has placed some incredible people into our lives. That is one of the things I LOVE about what we are doing! I get so excited to meet new people and hear their stories and see how we can all help each other out.

One of these amazing ladies is named Rhonda Spellman. Rhonda called me one day wanting more information about A.R.K. Angels. An hour later, we were talking about our families, our faith, our goals and hopes for the future. Turns out that Rhonda is an author of 2 children's books, Fire & Ice and When I Was A Little Boy, by Jesus. Rhonda is a HUGE advocate for Autism. Her son was diagnosed with Autism and a very young age. Through many years of research and through Rhonda's knowledge of writing, she was able to bring her son out of the state of autism that he was in! He now has written 5 books himself and is working on a movie script!

Rhonda has made it her life journey to share with everyone her knowledge and experiences with Autism. She has created an amazing workshop for all children. In this workshop, she teaches children of all ages how to write their own books. Each kids gets to write a 15 page book and then she "publishes" it for them. They all then get a copy of one of her books and a certificate. It's amazing! For more information about her workshops please visit her website at www.autismwithrhonda.com. We are hoping to do a workshop with Rhonda with The Medical Day Treatment Center at The Children's Hospital soon. We just need to find sponsors to help with the funding of this project.

Rhonda just recently wrote an article about A.R.K. Angels that will appear in a national magazine for autism. We will post this on our site once the issue is released, should be the November issue. This article is so wonderfully written! We feel so very blessed to have somebody like Rhonda believe in what we are doing and wanting to join forces to create something amazing for the kids! We look forward to what the future has in store with us and Rhonda, not just professionally but personally!

When you start to lose hope in what our world has become, certain people come into your life restoring your faith in human kind. There are still amazing people out there in our world! Imagine what we could do for all of these precious children who are suffering from some sort of disease. illness or disorder if we were all to join together? It gives me the chills thinking of the possibilities!

Huge Donation of Books!

This week we received an incredible donation of 20,000+ books from the Accelerated Schools off of Evans and Cook. What an incredible donation! This donation included brand new and used books, all in wonderful condition!

The staff at this school are so very nice and care so much about the kids that attend this school! This school is set up in a 1890's mansion. Its beautiful and fun to see them turn it into a school friendly environment!

2009 Book Drive

Our very 1st Annual Book Drive was this past weekend on August 1st and 2nd. And much to our surprise, it was extremely successful!

Saturday is was pretty slow but we still received about 1200-1500 books. Sunday was busy all day and we were able to completely fill up our 16' truck! We received not only books but thousands of brand new stuffed animals and beanie babies, which are absolutely perfect for the gift bags! We received a ton of brand new items that included reading books, crayons, coloring books, toys, etc. All donations were just absolutely wonderful!

We had a great time meeting and talking to everyone that stopped by! We appreciate the support that we are receiving from the public. We are so excited about where this is all going and can't wait to start making our gift bags and get them delivered! We have a lot of entering and book selling to do first but it will all come together very soon!

Channel 9 News Story

Last week The Children's Hospital was contacted by Channel 9 News in regards to doing a story about A.R.K. Angels! They will be interviewing us Thursday morning and the segment is supposed to air that evening. When we know times, we will post them.

This is very exciting for us! We are hoping to really advertise for the Book Drive on August 1st and 2nd. If we can make this event big and make everyone aware of what we are doing then we will be able to provide the kids at the hospital with some great gifts very soon!

Tomorrow's the Big Day

So we've now hit the news - a few times we've been told - and are looking forward to see what all this means come tomorrow. D-Day (Drop off day that is)...we are very anxious this evening wondering if the turnout will be what we expect or what the public expects. We have no idea. Times we both panic because maybe we won't be able to keep up with all the cars coming in and other times we panic because maybe no one will come. We are looking forward to this and we'll definitely keep you all posted as to how it turns out tomorrow...Wish us luck!

Today we went to The Children's Hospital and delivered a truck full of educational material to the Medical Day Treatment Center. This is the schooling program that the hospital has. It is an amazing program and is run by the most amazing staff! Their love for the children and what they do just pours out onto you the moment you step out of the elevator. It really is just incredible!

We were given a generous donation of text books, reading books, science kits, manipulative kits, etc. These items went to the school and they couldn't be more excited!

This was not our first donation trip. About 4 months ago we had delivered many more items for The Medical Day Treatment Center as well as The Children's Hospital.

We have been working very closely with Kathleen McBride who is the Director of Volunteers and Patient Representatives. Because of her and help from the amazing staff at the hospital, we are able to have our Book Drive and do all the events that we want with the kids in the future. We are also working closely with Arletta Swain who is the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner for The Medical Day Treatment Center. Thank you for all your help ladies!
